A little routine maintenance can go a long way and save a lot of money against expensive repair bills in the long term. Modern motor cars are indeed complex machines but there are still plenty of ways that drivers can do their part towards keeping their cars running safely and efficiently. Below is a list of simple checks and maintenance tasks that will help keep your car in tip top condition in between routine servicing intervals. Remember that if you are ever in any doubt about whether your vehicle is safe to drive you should always contact a qualified mechanic for advice.

Hints & tips for car maintenance

TYRES

  • Keep your tyres inflated to the highest pressure recommended by the manufacturer
  • Check your tyre pressures at least every month as all tyres deflate over a period of time
  • Regular wheel alignments and wheel rotations will maximize the life of your tyres
  • Unbalanced wheels will cause vibrations, premature tyre wear and will also accelerate wear of your steering and suspension components

BATTERY

  • Keep your battery top and post clean
  • Check and maintain your battery’s water level
  • Make sure your battery stays fully charged
  • Rub petroleum jelly on the post to minimize corrosion
  • A once-a-month battery check will ensure you get maximum life from your battery

COOLING SYSTEM

  • Check your coolant level on a regular basis
  • Remove your radiator pressure cap only when your engine is cold
  • Do not mix different types or brands of coolant

BRAKES

Have Your Brakes Checked If
  • Your brake fluid level is near the low mark
  • You hear and grinding or excessive squealing noises
  • You have any unusual vibrations
  • Pulling to one side

AIR CONDITIONING

  • To keep your air condition system running effectively, run it for about 5-10 minutes every week even in winter. This keeps the seals lubricated and helps prevent the air conditioning refrigerant from leaking out.
  • Have your air conditioning system serviced every year to prevent system failure
